Gais and Villa Ottone are both located on the banks of the Aurino River (Ahrnbach), surrounded by unspoiled forests in one of the most lateral valleys in South Tyrol. Gais and Villa Ottone together with their mountain areas Riomolino and Montassilone at the exit of the Tures Valley (Valle Aurina) towards Brunico keep the balance between old traditions and modern times.

The parish church San Giovanni in Gais is one of the most beautiful expressions of roman art in Puster Valley. In 1425 a special trustee used to live in the "Pflegerhaus" (House of the Trustee): Oswald von Wolkenstein and later on, during Second World War, another poet found refuge here - Ezra Pound. The Kings of Saxony passed through here, Napoleon spent his holidays at the house and Hermann von Gilm composed his verses in this building.
In this area traditions and religion are closely interlinked with each other and the peoples patriotism is still expressed today.
At the feast of All Saints the "Pitschelesingers" wander around the village and the usual Sunday processions take place, and when the "Kirchtagsmichl" (Bank holiday Michel) hangs high upon a tree-trunk in Mulini village, then anything is possible! The whole villages of Gais and Villa Ottone celebrates for three days and enjoys the music of various orchestras.
